Today is World Hypnotism Day 2024 and what could be a better day to bust some hypnosis myths. Hypnosis can be such an incredibly powerful tool, and at this time of the year when people are so often wanting to change their habits, hypnosis is often overlooked. SO, here are some popular myths dispelled followed by some reasons why hypnotherapy should certainly at least be considered for many things a person needs support with. And finally, some conditions that hypnosis can help with. Myths vs Truths Myth #1: The hypnotist has complete control and can get you to share any information at all including your PIN numbers, passwords, and other deep dark secrets.
Truth: This is FALSE! In fact, the client is in complete control at ALL times. It is not possible to get those secrets out of a client because the client is fully aware of what they are saying and where they are. The conditions under which the client might share private information would ONLY eve be because they wanted to. A client must be willing to go into hypnosis and to stay there. Myth #2: A person can get stuck in hypnosis if the hypnotist doesn't bring them out of their hypnotic state for whatever reason. Truth: This is FALSE! If an emergency should occur, for example, such as a fire or the hypnotist suddenly taking ill, the person being hypnotised will be aware that something is wrong and can open their eyes and become completely alert and take appropriate action. It is true that after a particularly relaxing or intense hypnotherapy session, a client might feel a little spaced out upon waking, but a good therapist will have either 1) taken steps to prevent this, or 2) recognise it pretty quickly and resolve it immediately. And if those things aren't possible, the client will shake that feeling naturally not too long afterwards.
Myth #3: The hypnotist can get the client to 'do' things they wouldn't normally do, such as pretend to be a clucking chicken or perform other acts of any kind, sordid, hilarious or otherwise.
Truth: This is NOT TRUE! There are stage hypnotists who produce great hilarity by bringing members of an audience on stage and hypnotising them quickly and often rapidly and sensationally for entertainment. Then they will make suggestions which encourage crazy and funny things. What the audience may or may not have been privy to is the selection process for those who are on stage. The short version is that they MUST be willing participants. It simply doesn't work if the person doesn't want to comply, or if they can't.
Ask me about a personal experience of mine on stage once years ago, if you'd like a real life example of this!
Myth #4: You are asleep or black out when hypnotised.
Truth: NOT TRUE! You are completely aware and awake and conscious at all times. In fact, hypnosis is being described now as a focused state of awareness, not sleep. You are in a hyper alert state, not unconscious! Myth #5: Anyone can be hypnotized.
Truth: This is FALSE! There are those people who do not WANT to be hypnotized and therefore cannot be, and there are those who suffer with significant mental health conditions who cannot and should not even attempt to be hypnotized.
Reasons to consider hypnotherapy: #1: It is non-invasive. This means one does not need to delve deep into the inner workings of their mind and re-experience any trauma in order to change behaviour or thoughts with hypnosis. It IS possible to do the trauma work and dig deep with hypnotherapy, and under proper care and for the right reasons, it might be appropriate. But the very, very vast majority of successful hypnotherapy can be achieved without all that.
#2: It helps with so much more than just the reason a person sought it in the first place. For example, a person visits wanting to gain or lose weight. Not only will successful sessions see them managing their weight effectively and for the long term, but they very likely will also have boosted their self esteem, raised their confidence. released a lot of stress, and felt a lot more empowered in their lives. And these things will likely have happened BEFORE their weight is managed...because it is these things that shape our daily decisions, from the big to the small.
#3: Hypnosis has been likened frequently to a relaxing massage. The release of tension is absolutely huge, just after one session alone.
#4: Self hypnosis can be taught. Unlike so many other practices out there, which require the client to return for treatment, after a certain amount of time, it becomes appropriate to teach a client how to hypnotise themselves. This then means they are no longer reliant on their sessions and can go away and help themselves, which is rewarding and a money-saver! Note: Only perform self-hypnosis when it has been taught to you directly by a well-trained professional.
